Abstract

This presentation introduces a new research project supported by a NUSC Small Grant 2024-25, which examines the factors influencing researchers’ decisions to engage in the development of open scientific software. While open science continues to gain momentum, participation in scientific software remains limited compared to open access publishing and data sharing. Our study employs a conjoint experimental design to explore the relative importance of key attributes—such as recognition mechanisms, community composition, and forms of social validation—in shaping researchers’ willingness to adopt and contribute to open scientific software initiatives. Participants will be presented with pairs of hypothetical software environments that vary systematically across these dimensions, allowing us to isolate the attributes that most significantly impact decision-making. The experiment will be implemented using the Qualtrics, with approximately 500 academic researchers recruited via Prolific. As this is an early-stage presentation, we will outline our current design, planned timeline, and methodological considerations to invite early feedback. Our findings aim to inform evidence-based recommendations for research institutions and funding bodies seeking to better align incentives with open scientific software development—an increasingly vital aspect of transparent and reproducible research practice.
