Abstract

The concept of innocence work in England and Wales was formally introduced in 2004 when it was explored in the context of establishing innocence projects in UK universities. Innocence work starts after the criminal appeals process, supporting individuals who want to make applications to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC). It is a type of clinical legal education that occupies a unique position in the criminal justice system. The pedagogy of learning for students is grounded in the innocence project model developed in the United States of America, but has been modified to not only fit within higher education in England and Wales but also to fit with the requirements of the CCRC. The diverse learning experience helps build a critical perspective of the criminal justice system, but also exposes students to an environment where they are motivated by the hope that they can effect change. Its clinical legal education, just not as you know it.
