Abstract

Despite having natural resources, rich history, and a favorable climate, İzmir has not been able to fully utilize its tourism potential in terms of visitor numbers, length of stay, and expenditure compared to other destinations in the Mediterranean region. The purpose of this research is to identify İzmir’s strengths and weaknesses in tourism, as well as the opportunities and threats that will create or hinder tourism development in İzmir through a systematic literature review. As a result of the search conducted in the TR Index and Web of Science databases, 61 articles containing the keywords “İzmir” and “tourism” in the abstract section were reached. The document analysis method was adopted in the research. In the study, Microsoft Excel and SPSS programs were utilized in the data analysis process, and the articles were subjected to content analysis. The research findings were summarized under five main categories: characteristics of the reviewed articles, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It is expected that the strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and threats identified in this study, will contribute to the relevant literature and that the recommendations made in line with the findings will guide both decision-makers and practitioners
