Abstract

Objective: The study was designed to investigate the relationship between plasma lipid level and cognitive function in the elderly based on diet and lipid metabolism related gene ApoE, CD36 rs1049673, rs1054516, rs2151916 and SCARB1 rs5888 genetic polymorphisms.
Method: 177 MCI patients and 177 age (±2 years old) and sex matched control subjects were recruited. Diet quality distance (DQD), genetic risk score (GRS) and total risk score (TRS) were calculated. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) plots were used to investigate the relationship between plasma lipid levels and cognitive function according to DQD, GRS and TRS in the elderly.
Results: Logistic regression analysis showed higher plasma TC, TG and HDL-c levels predicted increased risk for MCI in the elderly. Relationship between plasma TC, TG and HDL-c levels with the risk of MCI would be weakened in subjects with high DQD (≥18). Elevated plasma TC and HDL-c levels correlated with increased risk for MCI in subjects with low (0–5) or high GRS (6–10). For people with high TRS (20–36), increase in plasma LDL-c level could decrease the risk of MCI.
Conclusions: Our findings suggested that dietary intake and lipid metabolism related gene polymorphisms might modify the relationship between plasma lipids and MCI in the elderly. The elderly with higher plasma TC and HDL-c levels displayed a greater risk for MCI. Plasma TC at the level of higher than 4.94 mmol/L and HDL-c higher than 1.33 mmol/L might predict an increased risk of MCI in the elderly.
