This exhibition takes as its starting point a photograph of Teresa O’Connor, the artist’s maternal grandmother, taken in a Montreal photographer’s studio in 1912. This image found at the artist’s home in an old box of family photographs, prompted her to search for information on the life of her grandmother who died in 1971. What she was doing in Montreal at that time? What prompted her to go to Canada in the first place and what was her reason for returning home just six years later? Themes of memory and remembering emerge, as do those of leaving and being left behind. Through the artists journey of discovery of her own past, she gives the audience the chance to reflect on the value of their own personal histories and stories.
