Increased awareness of and research developments in the area of workplace bullying has allowed researchers and practitioners to have a better understanding of this phenomenon and how it impacts on individual and organisational life. However, we have tended to see workplace bullying in isolation to bullying in other contexts and this paper aims to discuss a number of issues surrounding the literature in workplace bullying in relation to bullying research undertaken in other contexts. Specifically we consider the theories, ideas and empirical evidence presented for school bullying, prison bullying, care home abuse, elder abuse, pre-school aggression and cyber-bullying. We will draw conclusions regarding developmental changes, gender differences, individual risk factors, measurement issues, interventions and specific social and physical aspects of each environment which may influence bullying and relate them to the working context. We consider whether research in these other contexts can help us understand better workplace bullying, issues that appear to cross all contexts and note the role that workplace bullying may play in helping to further research in these other areas. Implications for developments will be discussed, including the role of theory in furthering our understanding of the phenomenon and whether we can ever have a meta-model of bullying.
