Abstract

Our collective human activities, and the aspirations and lifestyles of our expanding human population, are not sustainable. We face multiple threats and associated crisis events. Combinations of them occurring together, would overwhelm government agencies, public bodies, infrastructures and emergency services. As the world polarises and fragments, we have a common and shared interest in ensuring our continuing existence. India has a critical role to play. Growth projections suggest it may account for an ever-increasing share of global emissions. Faster progress to net zero could tip the balance in favour of our collective survival. By reconnecting with its ancient wisdom and Mahatma Gandhi, India could become the first post-materialistic and sustainable society and lead the way to simpler, less stressful, healthier and more balanced and fulfilling lifestyles.
