Abstract

Not everyone was happy in 1943 when a large new London County Council (LCC) out of county estate was proposed near Watford to help ease the wartime housing crisis, on the other side of the railway to Carpenders Park and its station, to be known as South Oxhey. South Oxhey was an entirely new estate providing some 3850 new houses and flats with its layout reflecting principles of the garden city movement. It captured the new post war optimism, linking housing with health, its architecture a time capsule of the era. It was not initially without problems, lacking roads and amenities, with many new residents feeling isolated. Gradually, shops, health centres and Bauhaus influenced schools were built. This poster draws from archives, autobiography, novels and lived experience about South Oxhey, illustrated with contemporary photographs. It traces its beginnings in the 1940s to the place it has become today. Municipally it has shifted from the LCC to the Greater London Authority (GLA) to Three Rivers District Council and its housing stock’s fate has followed political priorities. This paper captures the essence of the estate, its ideals, successes and challenges, and asks what we can learn from such a bold undertaking that has provided homes, facilities and amenities in this suburban location over decades.
