Traditional classroom teaching and learning is not always able to ‘hit the spot’ for students learning about housing and is legacy in creating healthy living environments and community. As part of our own learning process of training housing practitioners through effective pedagogies, as well as attaining and better understanding of local housing, we developed our earlier work in creating and delivering a housing history walking tour in another part of London. For this new tour, the very process of immersing ourselves in the Greenwich vicinity, beyond its World Heritage Site status, provided a fascinating creative learning process and our own research into interesting housing we identified.
This presentation demonstrates our photography rich app and learning activities we created for a walking tour through Greenwich housing and health history and its legacy today. Here, we focus on some of the LCC housing the walking tour passes through – notably Hardy Cottages, an unusual example of an early 1900s cottage housing scheme to the hugely contrasting 1930s Meridian estate, on the banks of the River Thames. We also refer to other LCC endeavours along the way such as the Old Woolwich Road school, identified by its proud plaque. We refer to some of the wider resources available to develop learning further, including online and archives.
