Abstract

Meeting the grand challenges and wicked problems of our time requires an in-depth understand of how the systems of society emerge and evolved into the modern society. This chapter introduces a systems lens, specifically a Luhmannian view of systems to understand grand challenges differently and examine the role of social entrepreneurship in initiating systems change. Seen through Lohmann’s sociological perspective, we argue that wicked problems arise due to the challenges of communication across the social systems of modern society. Through this Luhmannian view, this chapter seeks to discuss why society is complex, how changes in one subsystem leads to adaptations in others, and briefly introduce the role of humans in the modern society.
