Abstract

Mental disorders, particularly depression, are prevalent among older adults, posing a significant public health challenge as the global population ages. The ageing process often exacerbates psychiatric conditions, with over 20% of adults aged 60 and above affected by mental health issues. Traditional treatment options, such as medication, are often limited by side effects, costs, and reduced efficacy over time. Physical activity and structured exercise have emerged as accessible, low-cost interventions with substantial mental health benefits for older adults. Research demonstrates that activities like Tai Chi, walking, and resistance training can reduce depressive symptoms and improve overall well-being. However, challenges remain in promoting and maintaining physical activity among older populations due to barriers like physical limitations and lack of motivation. This study underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in encouraging physical activity for mental health benefits in older adults,
