Abstract

This chapter will explore definitional frameworks and contemporary understandings of wellbeing. It will focus on wellbeing as a multi-dimensional concept, constructed on the individual and structural levels, and focus upon its relevance to current health and social care policies. It will refer significantly to McNaught’s Definitional Framework of Wellbeing. The framework attempts to define the parameters within which operational definitions of wellbeing and research can be devised and is conducive to articulating wellbeing policy and practice. It is particularly useful in broadening development of wellbeing models and indicators, use in policy and practice, and its ability to link to, and support, broader theoretical frameworks, and research. It will use UK and comparative examples across the OECD.
