Abstract

This chapter explores aspects of irregular warfare, and its suppression, in colonial South Asia. It shows how irregular and frontier conflicts were invested with wider imperial significance – as the “surf that marks the edge and advance of civilization”– and how the principles and practices for fighting ‘small wars’ were shaped by the cultural frames which mediated colonial violence in South Asia. Tracing the emergence of doctrine in the late nineteenth century from practices evolved during preceding decades, I argue that frontier and irregular conflict can also reveal the logic and calculations of those who opposed, as well as those who collaborated with, expanding colonial power.
