Abstract

This chapter outlines the primary aims of the book and defines health and social care. The 38 countries of the OECD are introduced, and the importance of comparative analysis is explored including difficulties which arise when comparing diverse countries. An overview of some health and social care issues are focused upon including the impact of COVID 19 on health and social care systems and the importance of a well-trained and supported workforce. Finally, the outline of the book is discussed. Part 1 of the book focuses on core concepts in health and social care policy and practice such as typologies and theories of welfare regimes, health and social care financing, wellbeing, health inequalities, partnership working including integrated care, and service user involvement. Part 2 then continues by focusing on specific health and social care topics, exploring issues across OECD countries or selected OECD countries using a comparative lens. Specific topics focused upon in part 2 are homelessness, domestic violence and abuse, substance use policies, health inequalities and people with learning disabilities, women in prison, end of life care, dental services, long term care services, health policies in OECD countries for refugees and migrants, and loneliness.
