Abstract

Partnership working has been the focus of government policy across the OECD for many years, resulting in the introduction of a range of policies and legislation which has led to the reorganisation of health and social care services. The aim is to foster partnership working within and between health and social care sectors as well as with the public, service users, voluntary sector, and private sector. This focus on policy reform and partnership working, however, is often uncritical; taking for granted that partnership working is beneficial without compelling and robust evidence to support these claims. Coupled with this, partnership working can be challenging due to the complexity of health and social care systems and the complexity of service user needs with numerous barriers to partnership working being evident. This chapter will explore the meaning of partnership working, focusing on partnership working between professionals and between organisations or agencies, and outline the benefits and challenges of this way of working. It continues by focusing on two examples of partnership working across the four devolved nations of the UK; the integration of health and social care services and integrated partnership working to safeguard children.
