Abstract

Billions are spent by cities and nations around the world in the hosting of mega-events like the London 2012 Olympic Games. However 'legacy' has come to be defined narrowly, typically in terms of property development. Using the structuralist analytic lens of 'collective memory' (Halbwachs, 1925/1992) and a visual ethnographic method, this conference presentation reports preliminary findings on markers and monuments that commemorate the London 2012 Olympic Games and reflects on their social meanings.
