Abstract

Oral history interview with Eugene Simpson, 17 July 2010, Nashville, Tennessee. Born Pasadena, CA, 1933. Entered the motion picture industry as an electrical rigger in 1965 and retired in 1993. His father was an actor; two periods working at Lockheed, Burbank 1954-57 and again after leaving the air force, 1957-63; USAF, 1954-57; college; during 1965 Los Angeles uprising was told about a studios minority training programme; resistance from IATSE local 728; one year at Paramount as part of minority training programme; then worked at a number of other LA studios and networks; location shooting in the South; on the crew of the Learning Tree (1969 release), directed by African-American Gordon Parks; 1969 Best Boy; Eugene talks about himself, the nature of his work, prejudice within the industry and how he responded.
