Abstract
Open innovation, pioneered by Henry Chesbrough in 2003, encompasses three types: outside-in, inside-out, and coupled processes. Most research has emphasized the outside-in process, with limited focus on the eventual cessation of these innovation relationships. In this study, we look at "closing open innovation" and differentiates it from termination of other forms of business partnerships. “Closing open innovation” refers to a strategic reduction or termination of specific open innovation activities. Specifically, this paper investigates the effective closure of open innovation, focusing on its impact on technological innovation performance (TIP). Through conducting a regression analysis on 103 high-tech Chinese firms from 2015-2019 and a social network analysis of two case studies, we highlight the importance of controlling knowledge flows within innovative networks.
