Abstract

Dawson’s contribution, ‘Northern Manufacturers and the Coming of the American Civil War’, while drawing upon the extensive primary research that went into writing Lives of the Philadelphia Engineers, has another purpose: it addresses the tricky relationship between class (workshop owners) and consciousness (religion, politics, and social outlook) and sets it within a Marxist theoretical framework.
