Abstract

An important remaining lacuna in the literature on engagement SRI concerns the concerns the content of the engagement dialogue. This might be because the engagement dialogue is perceived as most likely to succeed when absolute confidentiality is maintained and thus researchers have until now not found access to these dialogues. Nevertheless, such insight is necessary if engagement SRI is to maintain its legitimacy as an effective way to influence corporate behavior.

This paper aims to contribute to filling that void. We use data from the Portfolio21 engagement process. This process is confidential but is carried out in written form with letters going back and forth between Vigeo (to whom Portfolio21 outsources the initial screening and engagement activities) on the one hand and top management of investee corporations on the other hand.
