Abstract

For the 18th edition of the Rose Bruford College International Symposium, Prof. Jorge Lopes Ramos collaborated with RBC students and staff to curate a range of meetings and experiences with guests from the UK and around the globe. Exploring cultural and creative diversity in the intersection between artistic disciplines, the Symposium invited participants to transit between familiar and unfamiliar spaces. ‘In a world where mainstream narratives normalize hate and fear, and where contemporary loneliness is a new epidemic, there is a need for shared rituals, new narratives and experiences that empower those most vulnerable to have a voice and participate in culture.’ Persis-Jadé Maravala and Jorge Lopes Ramos, directors ZU-UK (performance & digital arts company). The symposium responded to the overwhelming growth of productions that describe themselves as ‘participatory’, ‘interactive’ and ‘immersive’ by exploring the role of the audience in the developing, making and experiencing of contemporary theatre and performance. Symposium contributors and attendees were invited to help question the relevance of old models for contemporary challenges, creating a shared temporary community from the 15th to the 17th April 2019 in Lamorbey Park, Kent.
