A confidential exploratory report, commissioned by UN Women, investigating the status, rights and lived experience of hidden LGBTIQ+ communities in a specific MENA country. The report focuses on the health and wellbeing of these communities. It provides a comprehensive literature review of policy in the areas of law, protection services and healthcare and conducts interviews with key figures in local and international women's and human rights organisations. Interviews are also conducted with LGBTIQ+ individuals and informal support organisers. The report finds minimal state and official support for these communities, who are criminalised and pathologised, but a hidden network of informal support for LGBTIQ+ individuals. Unsurprisingly, there is a great deal of fear and danger experienced by those who identify or are identified as LGBTIQ+. The report concludes with 14 recommendations, framed around rapid intervention, policy and decision making and community outreach and awareness. Based on a needs-based (as opposed to a rights-based) approach, the key recommendation is for the creation of a pilot safe space, able to provide physical refuge to those in crisis; social space to address emotional wellbeing and psychological space to address trauma. The report was accepted in full by UN Women.
