Abstract
The article examines the Supreme Court decision in Guest v Guest [2022] UKSC 27 which considered the purpose of the remedy of proprietary estoppel and whether it should compensate for detriment, in a case where the court ordered payment of a lump sum to a son who had been assured that he would inherit a substantial share of the family farm, but the farm would have to be sold in order to realise that sum.
