This paper will explore the role of the writer and the screenplay in the conceptualisation process of video games. It will ask how much the conventions of writing for the cinema screen have been imported into this process and how much it differs in its conventions. In pursuing this question, I will cover such areas as development documents and script formats, but will also examine the particular type of conceptualisation involved. Drawing on interviews with games writers, developers and publishers, I will explore the extent to which the creation of successful game narratives might be less about linear plot and more about depth and breadth of story world and character. In order to better understand the current and future role of the writer and the screenplay within videogame conceptualiation, I will go on to examine the crucial relationship between writer and designer and to interrogate the extent to which the process of development is framed and driven by the exigencies of technology. Finally I will ask how the practices and conventions of screenwriting currently establishing themselves within games might impact onto the future of screenwriting, at the levels of both conceptualisation and documentation.
