Abstract

This chapter in Routledge’s “Companion to British Women’s Suffrage” explores the much-overlooked presence of men in the late 19th and early 20th century campaigns for women’s emancipation. It reflects on the developments in scholarship since the publication in 1997 of the seminal collection that I co-edited: “The Men’s Share? Masculinities, Male Support and Women’s Suffrage in Britain, 1890 -1920”. This chapter also presents new perspectives on male supporters, contrasting representations of masculinity and chivalry and the consequences of their activism on political identities and the politics of gender.
