Abstract
This is the first ever complete scholarly assessment of Alfred Austin's career as a journalist. It reveals previously-unread letters to Austin from senior government figures and presents for the first time instances in which the late Victorian government manipulated the press, providing a new perspective on the workings of the press in the late C19th as well as a re-evaluation of Alfred Austin's career as Poet Laureate and its relation to his journalistic output. It also provides fresh background to his sustained criticisms of Robert Browning (and that poet's responses).
