Abstract

Rapid uncontrolled development has led to changes in the landscape and impacts on the local environment and livelihoods of rural communities in the coastal area of Kutch district, Gujarat, India. This has potential impacts on local ecosystem and the services that they deliver and so this research, funded by the British Council UKIERI initiative, was carried out. The first step in identifying ecosystem services was to carry out landcape assessment to identify natural areas. The coastal plain was selected for in depth study and, after stakeholders had been identified focus groups were held to assess local perceptions of changes in ecosystem services and what were the causative agents. The results show that local communities have experienced a decrease in water supply and increasing soil salinity which is impacting on livestock rearing and agriculture as well as decreases in fish stocks. The need for a more integrated approach to landuse planning, taking the needs of local people into account, is suggested.
