Abstract

This 7,500 word introduction to Roy Williams's 2010 play Sucker Punch, a play about boxing and the black experience in 1980s Britain, sets the play in its theatrical and cultural context and introduces readers to some of the critical debates surrounding Williams's work. After an overview of Williams's career and an account of the production and reception of the play, the introduction is divided into three substantial sections: 'Sucker Punch and the 1980s', 'Sucker Punch and Boxing' and 'Representing Black Experience in Sucker Punch'. The introduction as a whole makes the case for Sucker Punch as a play that offers a distinctive cultural and historical perspective on issues of race and class that came into focus in the 1980s and continue to resonate today. It draws on a specially conducted interview with the playwright.
