Abstract

The international monetary system underwent structural changes after 1971, especially with the emergence of the pure-dollar standard. In this way, this article investigates the limitations and the current adequacy of the Marxist monetary theory in the light of those new economic determinants. We show the ontological necessity of the existence of the inconvertible money form and the logical problems engendered by it when considering Marx’s theory of money. Lastly, we develop a Marxian approach to theoretically apprehend this new pure-dollar standard.
