The experience of comfortable camping has been around for hundreds of years but the term glamping which denotes a new interest in glamorous forms of camping has only been in circulation since 2005. The term embraces all types of semi-permanent camping structures from tents to Romany caravans and the glamper enjoys all the facilities of home with beds, linens, carpets, heating, lighting and catering facilities. A plethora of businesses have now appeared offering glamping holidays and glamping-themed equipment is offered by many retailers. It is a high-profile activity but the numbers of actual glampers is small compared to mainstream camping. However as the trend for staycations close to home continues and as people increasingly seek out novel and nostalgic retreats from the pressures of life, glamping seems to have a strong future.
