Abstract

Manufacturing companies tend to improve their market position by being first in the market place. One way to achieve this is to reduce the time taken for new products to be designed, tested and validated so that they can reach customers before the competition. This project investigates the organizational and managerial factors that contribute to the time spent on the testing of new products during development at a UK manufacturing plant. This paper first presents the evolution of the manufacturing industry, followed by a brief explanation of the investigation carried out which consisted of three sections, i.e., observations and process modelling, utilization metrics, and a questionnaire-based investigation, from which a proposed framework to improve and reduce the product development time cycle is presented. This project’s main focus is towards the improvement of the utilisation of product testing facilities and the links to its main internal stakeholders - the product development engineers.
