Abstract

The integration of wider development approaches in the fisheries sector is essential for the sector to be fully involved in the development process. A Guide to the Analysis of Fish Marketing Systems Using a Combination of Sub-sector Analysis and the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach discusses the main elements to be considered when analysing a fish marketing chain from a livelihoods perspective. This analysis uses both the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach and sub-sector analysis and argues that this combination of methodologies delivers the most reliable results. Although the guide can be used for the analysis of any fish marketing chain in developing countries, the focus is on the marine fisheries sector using two DFID-funded research projects in India and Bangladesh as case studies. It is primarily aimed at researchers and development practitioners investigating fisheries-based communities or sub-sectors with the intention of preparing project interventions or policy recommendations.
