Abstract
The term 'research' is a broad one and different academic disciplines have quite different understandings of what it constitutes. A lack of commonality across disciplines, over research methodologies and the status of knowledge, means that it can be hard to conceptualize academic research within a single framework. Such a framework is vital, however, if interdisciplinary projects are to succeed, research is to be properly supported and internal and external HE research agendas are to be met. Our research shows that looking beyond arguments of epistemology and investigating research as a human practice leads to a more integrated understanding of research as a process. We propose that the facilitation of research needs to be informed by a holistic view of the timespace of research.
