Increasing competition in the automotive industry has been responsible for consolidation aimed at taking advantage of economies of scale and greater upstream supply chain co-ordination. In recent times, there has been more focus n the downstream supply chain as stakeholders continuously seek to gain competitive advantage. For example, the application of internet technology to downstream activities within the industry has not been as significant as that of other sectors such as the travel and food industries. This paper, based on three case studies presents the findings of a study to understand the challenges faced with regards to communication between OEMs and automobile dealers and consumers. The study found that internet technologies can play a significant part in improving efficiency and information visibility in downstream operations. The study also suggested that the operational ‘weak link’ in the supply chain needs to be addressed through technological investment and relationship development between OEMs and automobile dealers.
