A microwave diplexer is a three-port component, which is usually employed in a communication system to split input signals from a common port into two channels operating at different centre frequencies. The common approach to synthesis a diplexer is to design each channel filter individually and then to design a distribution network to combine these two separated channels. In [1-2], we have proposed a coupled-resonator based diplexer structure that eliminates the need of separate common junctions for the distribution of energy. This leads to a significant reduction in diplexer size and volume. The design approach of this type of diplexer is based on synthesis of coupling matrices using a gradient-directed optimisation. To obtain desired quasi-elliptic filtering responses for a specified channel, cross couplings need to be introduced at corresponding branch to generate transmission zeros. In this work, we demonstrate a novel multiplexer design with two transmission zeros. These two transmission zeros are shared by both channels, and are generated by introducing a cross coupling between resonators in the main stem rather than adding a cross coupling to each separate branch. This alternative approach to produce transmission zeros for both channels simplifies the diplexer design procedure. The design is demonstrated in X-band waveguide.
