Abstract
The announcement that the UK had agreed to buy power from Hinkley Point at 92.5 £/MWh for 35 years was bound to cause public concerns given the large price rises during the last decade. However, there are at least other two aspects that are surprising. First, the fact that the arrangements under which the deal with EdF was made represent part of a larger move by the British government to reduce the role of the market for the electricity sector in favour of a centrally planned system. The second issue is that the deal breaks almost every government promise made when the nuclear policy was launched in 2006 and must be seen as a serious failure of the British government policy process.
