Abstract
This article sketches different approaches to recognition of research excellence across a range of countries. It then considers four national systems with extensive assessment exercises, some linked to performance-based funding. It records recent moves to develop international comparisons of quality as universities aspire to become world leading. It summarizes some of the critical issues relating to criteria for assessment and the processes of evaluation together with the impact on academic staff subjected to evaluation.
