Abstract

A high proportion of GPs now employ counsellors and pay for their sessions out of National Health Service funds. This paper considers whether it is an appropriate use of these resources and cites the various forms of research evidence currently available. the conclusion includes recommendations on the organization of counselling services in general practice together with the suggestion that GPs and counsellors should work together to develop services aimed at improving the psychological care of the patient population as a whole.
