Abstract

This chapter draws on the voices and experiences of sex workers to explore how the internet, and associated technologies, have shaped, diversified, and expanded commercial sex markets. It explores how experiences of sex work intersect with both the context in which it takes place and within systems of power and oppression that create advantages and disadvantages for individuals. The aim here is to move beyond binary debates of oppression or empowerment and show that sex work includes various labour processes, in different contexts, and by individuals with different backgrounds and identities. The author’s empirical research with people who sell sexual content and services online in the UK provides a case study that highlights both the opportunities and drawbacks of digitally mediated forms of sex work. Students are asked to engage with Chandra Mohanty’s (2003) concept of oppositional agency to explore choices made by sex workers.
