Abstract
To mark the 20th anniversary of the repeal of Section 28, the ‘Section 28 and Its Afterlives’ project organised a series of creative workshops with LGBTQ+ staff, students, and community members across South West England. These workshops offered a space to reflect on Section 28 and its legacies, engaging with this challenging period of recent LGBTQ+ history in a hands-on, empowering way using collage to create personal, subversive, and emotional responses to a range of historical material. This article reflects on collage as a queer creative health praxis of subversion and resistance that: (1) produces relational encounters, (2) operates in a care-full way, and (3) involves non-linear temporalities and transformations. Collage in this context is a mode of historical enquiry, inviting reflections on the echoes of the past, present, and future; multiple spatialities and temporalities; and the generative, transformative potential of discomfort.
