Abstract

This chapter looks at the project of ‘Decolonization’ at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) focusing on the effort to ‘decolonize’ the LSHTM Library Services, Archives and Collections. It positions libraries as eigenstructures in ‘world society’ theory, theorizing the library space as a ‘third’ ethnographic space, situated in the mediatory ground where world history reciprocates with the school’s institutional vocation according to the times – including its relation to history and its own past. In doing so, it highlights the paradox in the project’s idealism: to break away from the institution’s own history as a means of redefining its current vocation in the medical world and educational impact in the emerging world society.
