Abstract
Potato and fish value chains in Kenya have been severely affected by COVID-19 pandemic and the measures put in place by the government to contain it. In Kenya, as in many other countries, lockdowns, curfews, travel restrictions and other restrictive measures were introduced in March 2020, soon after the outbreak of the pandemic. Over time many of these restrictions have be removed, relaxed, reintroduced or strengthen in an attempt to achieve a balance between public health and economic priorities under changing circumstances. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Kenya have been reported among the ones which have been most severely impacted by these restrictions worldwide. This study aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic and investigate the short- and longer-term responses and pivoting strategies deployed by actors in the midstream of the fish and potato value chains in face of COVID-19 restrictions, with a focus on traders and processors. This study utilized longitudinal data collected from traders and processors located in counties which were purposively selected to represent key production and consumption areas in the two value chains. Data were collected from 518 and 419 actors in the potato and fish chain, respectively, resulting in a total sample size of 937 respondents.
