Abstract
Purpose - This study addresses the limited understanding of how entrepreneurs transition from hybrid to full-time entrepreneurship in high-risk or volatile environments by exploring this process in the context of Pakistan, where research is scarce and typically focused on stable, developed economies.
Design/Methodology/Approach - The study draws on Effectuation Theory and Job Embeddedness Theory. It adopts a multiple case study approach using qualitative interviews with hybrid entrepreneurs from sectors such as education and accounting. Narrative data were analysed through thematic matrix development to identify patterns and insights.
Findings - Three key themes shape the transition process: (1) Motivations rooted in financial pressures, social support, and a desire to innovate; (2) Challenges including limited resources, tensions between employment and entrepreneurship, and vulnerability to economic shocks; and (3) Strategies based on phased transitions, professional networking, and adaptive decision making.
Practical Implications - The findings offer actionable insights for entrepreneurship educators, policymakers, and support agencies in emerging economies seeking to facilitate sustainable entrepreneurial transitions.
Originality/Value - This study provides a holistic understanding of hybrid entrepreneurship in high-risk markets. It highlights how entrepreneurs act as strategic agents balancing necessity and aspiration, offering a transferable framework for understanding transitions in similarly volatile environments globally.
