Abstract

This book surveys external works construction and is an introductory text for those involved in the design, specification and construction of external works. It is written from the point of view of two landscape architects who have been practicing since the 1970s and originates from a lecture course, taught by Jamie Liversedge at the University of Greenwich. Its approach is that good construction design depends upon a knowledge of the chemical and physical characteristics of materials. Indeed good design is not necessarily the easiest (or cheapest) form of construction. The authors have worked in South East Asia, The Middle East and continental Europe as well as Britain. While written from a British standpoint the authors realize that there are often other ways of constructing external works than those commonly practised in Britain. Fashion and national practice plays a part in much construction work and one needs to see beyond the conventional to understand why.
The book begins with survey of overall themes dealing with vernacular construction techniques, the influence of industrialization and globalization (which influences construction as it influences supermarkets), and issues of sustainability and climate change. We cover the general principles of the properties of materials, and of structures and mechanics. At the heart of the book are introductions to the main materials used in building: stone, concrete, brick, metals, timber, glass, plastics, and some non-conventional materials old and new. We then look at built elements ranging from earthworks and retaining structures, to walls, ponds and small structures. Finally we end with describing assembly of built components, and a survey of ways of finishing and protecting materials. There are appendices with tables of component sizes.
