Abstract
Financial literacy is low in developing countries such as Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Financial literacy fosters demand for financial services and complements financial inclusion. It is the responsibility of both public and private sector players to promote financial consumer literacy in an economy. Consumer financial protection is a fundamental aspect of consumerism. It is everyone’s business. While it is the responsibility of governments and service providers to protect consumers, consumers should also make efforts to protect themselves. Financial literacy and consumer protection have topped the agenda of policy makers for the past few decades the world over. However, financial literacy and consumer protection are still in the early stages of development in developing countries such as Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Drawing insights from these four countries, this chapter explores the existing body of literature on financial literacy, financial consumer protection and the relationship between financial literacy and financial consumer protection. The chapter identifies the knowledge gap and provides recommendations for future research directions.
