Abstract
As part of her new one-woman performance, Eating Secret, Smith transforms herself into Mertle - a 1950s housewife - who encourages strangers to confess their peculiar eating habits. The stories range from hilarious to downright strange. The secrets are disclosed by audience members in one-to-one sessions just before going on stage. Once there, the secrets ingested in private are "regurgitated" in a monologue - using the secret-teller's own words - usually as part of a spoof cooking demonstration inspired by Mertle's idol, forgotten 50s celebrity chef, Elizabeth Craig.
