Abstract

Drawing on a unique set of longitudinal data gathered using a multi-method analysis of 17 social entrepreneurs throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we introduce the concept of entrepreneurial spatial sets and (social) entrepreneurship as the practice of maintaining and choreographing these spatial sets. We further implement a practice-tracing methodology (Pouilot, 2015) with 9 of our participants to examine the real-time implication of spatial restrictions on routine behavior and the extent to which social entrepreneurs engage in spatial choreography to continue the practice of entrepreneuring. Collecting our data during a time of unprecedent spatial restriction offers a unique lens for examining the taken for granted elements of space and allows us to identify the functionality of various spatial elements for engaging in the ‘nitty-gritty’ work of (social) entrepreneuring. Our findings suggest that the practice of (social) entrepreneuring is conducted within a unique set of spatial sets whose functionality is a function of the various spaces within the set. That is, the functionality of any given space is altered when one piece of the set is disrupted, and the ability to easily transition from one space to another is very much an exception rather than a rule.
