Abstract

This section outlines the contemporary significance of Responsible Research and Innovation and highlights Responsible Research and Innovation as a social innovation enabled by a social system overarching institutionalisation of co-responsibility for the outcomes of science and technology. The implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation as a new research and innovation paradigm requires institutional changes such as the emergence of public governance mechanisms for providing directionality to innovation and anticipatory governance as well as enabling value-driven innovation.
