Abstract
This study uses a randomized controlled trial to rigorously analyze the impact of index insurance bundled with credit and access to inputs. The study contributes to the small group of experimental field studies that examine the impact of insurance on investments. We are the first who compare standalone index insurance with an index insurance product bundled with credit and/or with credit and agricultural inputs, in terms of uptake and impact. Moreover, we provide farmers with a delayed premium option in order to address liquidity constraints and trust in the insurance provider to enhance uptake of insurance. The results demonstrate that take up of a standalone index insurance product does not enhance the adoption of new technologies. However, a package comprised of insurance, credit and inputs significantly increases investments in modern agricultural technologies. Thus, bundling insurance with credit and agricultural input options makes the insurance product more valuable.
