Abstract

This paper starts from the premise that ADHD may apply to a small proportion of children and
young people who experience particular difficulties that can best be described under the broad
umbrella term emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBDs). We propose that just as with
EBDs, there is a growing amount of folklore inherent in common perceptions of ADHD and that
perceptions are directly related to professional practice. We introduce preliminary findings from
The University of Greenwich Kent EBD Project (Maras & Hall, 1996) and consider inter and
intra professional relationships, perceptions, attitudes, actions, emotions and awareness in terms
of ADHD specifically and EBDs generally. Implications for current, and the development of
future, policy and practice are discussed
